All through these years, the Indian films has grown into four classifications, mainstream, parallel, Diaspora and regional. These sections are separated by a thin line and they tend to merge at times.

But, the general treatment decides its fate as a commercial or artistic venture. Upcoming Hindi films follow realistic and important subjects and portray taboo topics, even though commercial cinema is still hesitant to deal with these topics, because those subjects might not entertain the masses.

Bollywood stands as largest film industry in the world with regard to production, with more than thousand films every year in a single year. Sometimes the public assume that Bollywood and Indian movie industry are synonymous. This is incorrect as Indian parallel cinema is popular internationally. Several celebrated film festivals screen new Indian films which are usually well-received by an international film lovers. For example, Berlin film festival showed nine Indian films which was for the first time in Berlinale. The Man Beyond the Bridge, Road Movie and Peepli Live were some of the movies which received good responses from critics.

Even now Bollywood uses the technique of song and dance sequences in films but directors are experimenting with different topics which are connected more to reality. In Contrast parallel films and horror movies have already become capable of depicting ordinary lives. The experiment is visible in new Indian films such as Amir Khan's Peepli Live directed by Anusha Rizvi which deals with the suicides among poor farmers.

My Name is Khan starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, looked like a typical Hindi film but is a hit one which got a lot of appreciation internationally. This film was part of the official choice of Berlin film festival and the entry tickets of My Name is Khan were sold out within no time for 1000 Euros each.

Some critics think present Indian movie industry is just a shadow of its splendid past. At times this observation is true but success at box office of a film is dependent on the audience. Nevertheless as time goes by, many movies are changing to progressive even if in a small way unlike Hollywood movies which frequently deal with unusual topics.

Nowadays, Hollywood top directors and artists wants to appear in Bollywood movies. For example Hollywood director Danny Boyle had directed 'Slumdog Millionare' movie in Hindi and got Oscar award for that. For 'Paa' movie many make-up artists came down here to give Amitabh Bachchan a childish look suffering from an unusual disease. The calibre of Bollywood film industry is thus growing very well.
