Facts About Bollywood

By Ali Raza

Bollywood is the informal word that is used to describe the Hindi language films and film industry. Although it has been used incorrectly to describe Indian cinema, it is actually based in Mumbai and is the largest film producer in India and one of the largest in the world. The name Bollywood is obtained from the combination of the words Bombay, the previous name for Mumbai, and Hollywood, the American film production center.

The name dates back in the 1970s when India was the leading film producer in the world, ahead of America. The name was inspired by the term 'Tollywood' which referred to the Bengali Film Industry that was based in Tollygunge. When Bombay film industry overtook Tollygunge, the word Bollywood was coined. The seventies saw the new wave cinema with the entry of new film makers from different areas and so it continued to the eighties and nineties.

This film industry has a lot of inspirations from various sources. One of them is the ancient Indian epics which brought about the use of various techniques like side- and back-story as well as stories within stories. The other is the Ancient Sanskrit drama which features a highly stylized nature and an emphasis on spectacle. The main features of this drama include dance, gesture and music to create a dramatic effect. The other major influence is the traditional folk theatre, which was very popular in the 10th century. The influence of Parsi theatre is also seen in this film production industry. It features the combination of fantasy and realism, music and dance, spectacle and narrative and stage presentation to create melodrama. The other major influence is Hollywood, especially the musicals. The only difference is that the Indian film producers used songs and dance to enhance fantasy and also give articulation to their movies. In the 1990s the western musical television has been seen to influence the music and dance of a lot of Indian films.

These film productions are recognized and awarded through various film events, with the major one being the Filmfare Awards, which was started in 1954 by Filmfare Magazine. During the same year the National Film Awards was introduced and was sponsored by the Indian government via the Directorate of Film Festivals. The DFF screens films from regional movie industries as well as independent or art films. Others within the region include Stardust and Star Screen Awards.

Bollywood has been producing different types of films that have been recognized not only within the Bollywood film industry but also other industries in the world.

A Glance Into Hindi Films Of Today

By Kevin Fernandez

All through these years, the Indian films has grown into four classifications, mainstream, parallel, Diaspora and regional. These sections are separated by a thin line and they tend to merge at times.

But, the general treatment decides its fate as a commercial or artistic venture. Upcoming Hindi films follow realistic and important subjects and portray taboo topics, even though commercial cinema is still hesitant to deal with these topics, because those subjects might not entertain the masses.

Bollywood stands as largest film industry in the world with regard to production, with more than thousand films every year in a single year. Sometimes the public assume that Bollywood and Indian movie industry are synonymous. This is incorrect as Indian parallel cinema is popular internationally. Several celebrated film festivals screen new Indian films which are usually well-received by an international film lovers. For example, Berlin film festival showed nine Indian films which was for the first time in Berlinale. The Man Beyond the Bridge, Road Movie and Peepli Live were some of the movies which received good responses from critics.

Even now Bollywood uses the technique of song and dance sequences in films but directors are experimenting with different topics which are connected more to reality. In Contrast parallel films and horror movies have already become capable of depicting ordinary lives. The experiment is visible in new Indian films such as Amir Khan's Peepli Live directed by Anusha Rizvi which deals with the suicides among poor farmers.

My Name is Khan starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, looked like a typical Hindi film but is a hit one which got a lot of appreciation internationally. This film was part of the official choice of Berlin film festival and the entry tickets of My Name is Khan were sold out within no time for 1000 Euros each.

Some critics think present Indian movie industry is just a shadow of its splendid past. At times this observation is true but success at box office of a film is dependent on the audience. Nevertheless as time goes by, many movies are changing to progressive even if in a small way unlike Hollywood movies which frequently deal with unusual topics.

Nowadays, Hollywood top directors and artists wants to appear in Bollywood movies. For example Hollywood director Danny Boyle had directed 'Slumdog Millionare' movie in Hindi and got Oscar award for that. For 'Paa' movie many make-up artists came down here to give Amitabh Bachchan a childish look suffering from an unusual disease. The calibre of Bollywood film industry is thus growing very well.
